Marketing a business is difficult

…especially when there are already so many out there.

No matter how impressive and unique you think your products are, the goal is to let other people know… and convince them to buy in.

We understand that it’s almost impossible to stand out, even if you’ve already done all the marketing work that you can.

That’s why it’s critical that you’ve got a marketing plan that’s on point.

In today’s article, we’ll let you in on our marketing plan prompt for you to use on ChatGPT (or any other LLMs) to help you develop a marketing plan that not only works, but is also easy for you to deploy.

Why Use This Prompt

Here’s the thing.

You might already have a marketing plan to begin with, so what’s the purpose of this prompt?

Well to put it simply, it could help you flesh out new ideas or arrange whatever you already have into something more cohesive.

We acknowledge that, of course, nothing will ever beat the human brain, especially when it comes to creating and ideating.

However, in these newer times and the current state of marketing (and well, just the current state of the digital realm in general), it can be hard to easily come up with ideas that work.

And by leveraging AI we can gain a comparative advantage that will allow us to gain even more traction, even if it’s just by means of generating new ideas.

And now that we’ve cleared the air on that, let’s head on over to the main program: the marketing plan prompt.

The Marketing Plan Prompt

This is a short, but sweet prompt that will give you comprehensive and substantial results when done right. Check it out:

Create a detailed marketing plan for my business. My business, [Your business name], operates in the [Your industry] industry and serves [describe your target audience, e.g., young professionals, small business owners, parents].

The primary goal of this plan is to [state your goal, e.g., increase sales by 20%, grow social media followers by 2,000, generate 500 leads], and I have a marketing budget of [state your budget, e.g., $5,000 per month or $100,000 for 6 months].

Our key strength is [highlight your unique selling point, e.g., affordable prices, eco-friendly products, or personalized service], and we primarily use [mention your preferred channels, e.g., Instagram, Facebook, Google Ads, email marketing] to reach our audience.

Additionally, I’d like this plan to address competitors like [mention your competitors] and include strategies to differentiate my business. Please include an executive summary, target audience breakdown, specific marketing objectives (using the SMART framework), detailed strategies for the mentioned channels, a budget allocation, a timeline, and key performance indicators to measure success.

Notice how we made sure that you can address your competitors in this prompt.

As much as every product is unique, it can be easy to generalize them along with similar services or products in the same category.

Since we choose to address your competitors, your unique selling points will be addressed, helping you build a stronger value proposition.

And customers would love nothing more for something different, but valuable for them to use.

The Output

Here’s a sample of the output with some placeholder text!

Create a detailed marketing plan for my business. My business, Hill Runners, operates in the footwear industry and serves working young adults.

The primary goal of this plan is to grow social media by 1000 followers and increase presence and engagement, and I have a marketing budget of $5,000 per month.

Our key strength is affordable prices with highly comfortable products that are sturdy and meant to last for long-term use, and we primarily use Instagram and Facebook to reach our audience.

Additionally, I’d like this plan to address competitors like Nike, Adidas and New Balance, and include strategies to differentiate my business. Please include an executive summary, target audience breakdown, specific marketing objectives (using the SMART framework), detailed strategies for the mentioned channels, a budget allocation, a timeline, and key performance indicators to measure success.

The key to this prompt is to be detailed in what your product strengths and specific goals are. Don’t be vague by simply saying you want more sales. That doesn’t really say much since everyone wants more sales.

Feed ChatGPT (or your chosen LLM) figures, like increasing followers by 1,000 or increasing sales by 20%. By doing so, the plan can be tailored accordingly.

Additionally, as you can see here, the plan is adjusted depending on the platforms that you specified in the prompt you filled out.

And ta-da, you already have a marketing plan to use or edit to your liking.

Leveraging Insights from the Plan

While the output given may already seem as good as they come, you also have to remember that because it is AI-generated, you have to double check it. Here are some sections that you will need to make sure is correct:

  • Demographics: Look at the demographics and psychographics included in the plan. Did it accurately describe the demographics you are going for? Because once an error is made with the target audience, the entire plan is in jeopardy. If it is incorrect, be sure to prompt it again and be more specific with your target market.
  • Competitor Benchmarking: Pay close attention to how your plan addresses competitors. Compare it with their strategies and identify gaps you can fill to differentiate your brand further.
  • Refine Your Unique Selling Proposition (USP): Take the suggestions for highlighting your USP and ensure that it is accurate. Additionally, make sure that it is actually aligned with the needs of your target audience.

What to Do Next?

So now that you have the results and you’ve double-checked it for accuracy, what do you do next? Here are some additional tips you can follow.

  1. Test Out the Strategy

While the results are most likely to be feasible and will give good results, you also need to remember that an LLM can’t predict the future (yet) or how people will react. Thus, it’s always best to test out the marketing plan you’ve received.

In the case of the example we’ve provided, we can do it through A/B Testing (creating two variations of an ad to see which one works better) and to run a smaller ad campaign, with a lower portion of the budget to see if it works.

You should always refer to your SMART goals to set expectations and adjust accordingly if things aren’t going exactly how they are expected to.

  1. Accept Change

Sure, the marketing plan may initially start out successful, but trends are ever-evolving and it could change in a snap.

Hence, be willing to accept change and be ready to do something new.

Always keep track of what’s trendy and viral, as well as match it with your marketing data. The moment you see it start to fall, try to come up with a new strategy and pivot (good news is, you can still use this prompt!)

  1. Stay Consistent

Marketing can be a long game. Sometimes, you can get lucky and immediately succeed, but other times, it can also take some patience.

Just be consistent. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Key Takeaways

A marketing plan can be hard to create and even more difficult to execute.

But with our prompt, we aim to make the process a little easier.

Now remember, this prompt (and AI in general) is not meant to replace human ideas, but rather complement them.

You still need to do the research, put in the analysis and add a touch of humanity.

Let us know how you’ve used this prompt!
